Life of St. Romuald by St. Pier Damiano

Saint Romuald founded the Camaldolese Order in the 11th century. Born in Ravenna, he died on June 19, 1027, the date on which he is celebrated.

His biography was written by Saint Pier Damiano (1007-1072), who was a Benedictine hermit monk, Doctor of the Church, and a central figure in the ecclesiastical reform of the 11th century, known for his ascetic life at Fonte Avellana.

Against you, O foul world, I must protest! You boast an unbearable crowd of foolish scholars, loquacious with you and mute with God. You have many proud people who arrogantly exalt themselves for their vain eloquence or their empty philosophy. But you have no one who feels inclined to document things useful for the edification of others and thus pass them on to posterity. In your courts you have many lawyers who know how to defend, with long speeches, disputes concerning secular affairs or legal disputes. But in the holy Church you have no one who is able to illustrate in writing the virtues and glorious deeds of a single saint. You have many wise men who do evil, but who are ignorant of doing good.
